MKZ Song suggestion

I hope to start somewhat of a new trend here at MKZ. In the increasing state of downloading music, entire CD's seem more and more a moot point as sometimes albums have only one good single and the rest is shit. So this is just a suggestion for *one* song to listen/download. Quite a suitable thing since explaining an entire CD might take ages to complete, but one song it opens a door to express what we feel about it, and hope that you might get similar if not different POVs. We do hope you do enjoy it, but the main this is a way to experiment in music, while not laying this entire *commitment* of listening to an entire CD onto your lap.

Appealing to those of our viewers with A.D.D. and such. Note that I won't try to force any my more personal tastes onto people here. More of music respectable yet still broad in appeal. So don't fret my friends...no Tea Party would appear on this page. Of course this is completely different from my Song Review which I would put on my personal blog which I would put up both good and bad. And now onto our first guest!

The Sky is a Landfill by Jeff Buckley

I already played this to death to my friends. In fact Mike already has it. The fact is, Jeff Buckley is I think a great lyricist, with beautiful tone. I think in general, this song encapsulates all the music Jeff Buckley has made (sadly only one real album has been released, he died a few years after the release of it). Personally I feel that this is a song quite like Rage Against the Machine's, but softer. It is like the peaceful/passive agressive rally against the establishment. This song really goes through a range of his vocal talents, but really doesn't do what he's best known for: his rich falsetto. I don't mean some stupid "hollow" high pitched voice ala N.Sync or BSBs...but a really rich falsetto that can be compared to the greatest of opera singers.

I really do have only two thoughts of this song...three if you count when I think about "magician performances" that could be produced to this song. The first one is I envision WW2 and how Hitler is supressing people in order to further his goals:

This way of life is so devised
To snuff out the mind that moves
Moving with grace the men despise
And women have learned to lose

The second one in general is a simple anti-estalblishment song. The lyrics above seems very anti-war (and drug usage):

Throw off your shame or be
a slave to the system

I see you take another drag
One more lost soul to raise your flag
The sky is a landfill

And when I hear the lyrics below, it just reminds me of the mass-consumer. With starbucks, McDonalds, Gyms and Tony Little (the informercial muscle guy) representing the steroids, feedbag, stable and trainers. With the inclusion of the "mail bomb" I always pictured a magician in a show tossing small parts of these symbols and then making them disappear in a puff of smoke.

With your steroids and your feedbag
And your stable and your trainer
I got a mail bomb for you Mister Strong Arm.

Needless to say, this song has great composition and has great flow. For me this song has this essence of hope, despite on how depressing it is. It might not instill hope in me particularily, but it just makes me feel great that at least someone else out there can have hope, and somehow I might as well.
